2 LARGE AMOUNT having or containing a lot of something
(+ in): Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C. | oxygen-rich/nutrient-rich/protein-rich etc (=containing a lot of oxygen etc): Pregnant women should eat protein-rich foods.
3 FULL OF INTEREST full of interesting or important events, ideas etc: the rich literary tradition of England
(+ in): a story that was rich in detail
4 SMELL having a strong pleasant smell: The rich scent of the pine trees was heavy in the air.
5 COLOUR having a beautiful strong colour: stained glass dyed a rich blue
6 FOOD containing foods such as butter, cream, and eggs, which make you feel full very quickly: a rich fruit cake
7 MUSIC/SOUNDS having a pleasant low sound: the rich tone of a cello
8 SOIL/LAND good for growing plants in; fertile (1): Cotton grew well in the rich, black soil.
9 CLOTH/JEWELLERY ETC expensive and beautiful: She stroked the rich velvet of the dress enviously.
10 that's rich (coming from him/you etc) used to say that what someone has said is unreasonable and that they are criticizing you for doing something that they do themselves: Ron told me I was disloyal. That's pretty rich coming from a married man.
11 PETROL having too much petrol mixed with the air, so that a car's engine does not operate smoothly
